CO-CAPTAIN Jack Grimes says he couldn’t fault his side’s intensity against St Kilda, although Melbourne went down by 25 points on Saturday at the MCG.

Roughly 20 minutes in the third quarter cost the Demons the match, when the Saints kicked seven goals to zip. But Melbourne showed some fight in the final term, kicking eight goals to four.

Grimes said he was pleased his team didn’t fall away when it could’ve easily done so.

“We felt like we really had a crack for the larger majority of the game, but it was just that third quarter that really hurt us,” he said.

“Early on in the game, it felt like we were in the contest and [we were a] bit frustrated with the way we finished off our entries inside 50. We missed a few shots on goal, but it really felt like we were in the game.

“But we have to keep working to find ways to stop those run-ons, so we stay in the game.”

Grimes, who continued his fine season with 29 disposals in his 50th AFL match, said he was pleased to be able to string continuity into his performance this season.

“It’s helped playing some consistent footy, as in games and being out on the park a bit more,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys who are really helping us out in that area and it doesn’t feel like it’s just Jack Trengove and I leading the way.

“There are a lot of guys stepping up and we really see a future there, but we have to keep working hard.”
