FORWARD line development coach Paul Satterley reviews the Melbourne-listed players who played in Casey’s 11-point loss against Essendon at Casey Fields on Sunday

VFL

Essendon 9.15 (69) d Casey Scorpions 9.4 (58)

Dom Barry: Dom had 16 disposals for the game. He endeavoured to take the game on as a wingman however generally had limited impact on the game.

Troy Davis: Given the extreme wind, Troy was used as a forward when we had the breeze and did his best, given the lack of quality inside 50s. Defensively, Troy was very good in our backline. He took four intercept marks and finished with 19 disposals for the game. He is playing very consistent football.

Tom Gillies: Aside from some positive offensive runs late in the game, Tom was relatively quiet with just 12 disposals. He was competitive in terms of his defensive efforts.

Jesse Hogan: Jesse worked through a couple of heavy knocks sustained in the game and stuck to the task all day. He only had the one mark and one goal, which was mostly reflective of the conditions and credit to his direct opponent.

Neville Jetta: Neville was used as a forward and midfielder. He had 10 disposals and kicked a goal. We do expect more from Nev as he had limited impact on the game.

James Magner: Another workmanlike performance from Jimmy. He again led the side for hardball gets, overall defensive efforts and disposals (winning 26 for the game). We didn't get full value from his possessions this week as the conditions impacted on both his effectiveness and the team.

Jordie McKenzie: Jordie played on the wing and as an inside midfielder. He finished with 18 disposals and four tackles and was relatively quiet for the game.

Daniel Nicholson: Daniel played a solid game. He spent the first half negating one of the Bombers dangerous small forwards before moving to the wing after half-time. He really led the way with his willingness to back his speed. This was a real positive component in his game.

James Sellar: James was used as a defender and was integral to our set up, particularly when we were kicking against the wind. James read the play well to regularly intercept the opposition inside 50s. His 20 disposals and six marks made him one of our better players.

Jake Spencer: Jake had a terrific battle with David Hille, finishing with 38 hit outs for the game. This was Jake's return to footy after missing three weeks due to suspension. On a positive note, he ran the game out well.

James Strauss: James played half-back and generated 21 disposals for the game. Like Nicholson, James tried to run the ball out with speed and did have some success in doing this.

Rory Taggert: Rory was one player who was not overly impacted by the conditions and his effectiveness by foot was a real positive. He also backed himself more. He was a solid performer after a dominant display in the Development League game the week prior.

Luke Tapscott: Luke was typically combative and hit the packs hard all day. He laid six strong tackles, had 15 disposals and kicked two goals for the game.

Josh Tynan: Josh was sound defensively and led the side with the most tackles – seven for the game. However he was below his recent offensive form with just the 14 disposals.

AFL Victoria Development League

Casey Scorpions 12.13 (85) d Sandringham 2.4 (16)

Maia Westrupp: Maia had a lot more involvements this week. He was credited with nine disposals and six marks for the game. He is working hard to apply his defensive skills and did some really good things to prevent the opposition scoring.
