For long-time Melbourne supporter Brett Noonan, entering “‘Robbo's Scratch and Win’ Raffle” was just a matter of supporting the club.
But this year, Brett received a phone call from Russell Robertson, with the club legend informing him he’d won the $30,000 Grand Prize.
While Brett had entered the $200 raffle for several years, tough financial circumstances meant the sudden windfall couldn’t have come at a better time.
“My company shut down two months ago and we’ve really been doing it tough,” Brett said.
“To be honest I couldn’t believe [I’d won] for a start and then I was just so excited when he told me.
“All the years you bought the tickets because you support the club and that’s what it’s all about and then all of a sudden this happens - it’s just incredible.”
While most of the prize money will go towards getting the family’s finances on track, Brett said he would also take the chance to treat his wife Gail to a holiday.
“I said to my wife, ‘you have to go and buy yourself something’”, Brett said.
“Being out of work, most of that’ll go on the mortgage and really set us up and then to be honest I’ll probably take her away on a little holiday somewhere.”
A loyal Melbourne supporter of 49 years, Brett said the prize money would offer his family more opportunities to catch their beloved Demons in action.
Gail has followed Melbourne since the couple met, while their children – daughter Tyra and son Ben – are also dedicated supporters.
“The first thing my wife said is ‘we’re buying a new membership’,” Brett said.
“We love going to the footy and we’ll be able to go up and watch some more games and maybe even catch an interstate game.”
While he may have won the competition this year, Brett said he planned to continue to buy raffle tickets to support the club and urged others to do the same.
“Buy a raffle ticket and you never know, it could be you.”
