SURGERY to repair the navicular bone in Jack Trengove's foot has been declared a success and now the Melbourne midfielder is knuckling down for a long recovery.

The 2009 No.2 was ruled out for the season almost three weeks ago after scans revealed a crack in his left foot.

"I caught up with the surgeon on Monday ... and he was happy with how it's progressed so far and it's just a matter of being diligent now and patient with the recovery," Trengove said on Friday.

"It's a long process but I'm happy with how it all went," he said.

AFL.com.au caught up with the 22-year-old as he rested at home, but he can't wait to get back to the club.

"It’s very boring. Daytime TV's got a bit too much for me and (I'm) just itching to get back into the club and become physically active again," he said.

"(I) won't be running or doing any sort of jogging for another couple of months.

"It’ll be a bit of upper body weights, something I can work on there, get a lot stronger and obviously jump in the pool.

"Eventually I’ll lose the crutches and then lose the moon boot and then I can start walking on my own two feet again."

With question marks over his form early this season, Trengove was dropped to the VFL, but it was only then that the extent of the injury became clear.

"No one ever wants to miss large parts of the season, and unfortunately I'm going to have to this time, but now that we've discovered what it is and we can get on top of it.

"I'm looking forward to getting it all behind me so I can focus on playing on footy with none of these issues in the future."

With no playing commitments, Trengove is throwing his support behind this year's Field of Women initiative at the MCG on Saturday 10 May.

He'll also travel to Glasgow to watch his sister Jessica compete in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games.
