YOUNG-gun midfielder Jack Viney says the Demons must back up their outstanding win-on-the-road against the Adelaide Crows next Saturday night against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG.

Although Viney couldn’t hide his delight in Melbourne’s nail-biting three-point win, he said it was important to build on the effort.

“I was talking to Mark Jamar and he hasn’t won in Adelaide in 13 years. It’s incredible to get a win – it gives you goosebumps and it’s going to be a massive confidence booster for the boys,” he told Dee TV.

“But we came out against Gold Coast after our Carlton win and played pretty poor, so we can’t drop [off again next round against the Western Bulldogs] like we did against the Gold Coast.

“We’ve got to really build on the season and build on this game.”

Viney said the win was particularly memorable, as the Demons were in a hostile environment.

“It was fantastic the way the boys fought it out at the end there – it makes it even more special, so I’m rapt,” he said.

“It was probably the biggest crowd I’ve ever played in front of and to play at Adelaide Oval in a new stadium and in incredible conditions – it was a really nice atmosphere.

“To get a win in front of 50,000 mad Adelaide supporters – I was actually really surprised at the Melbourne representation here – we had a great representation, and it makes it so much better celebrating the win.”

Viney said it didn’t worry him when acting Adelaide skipper Patrick Dangerfield kicked the first goal just 50 seconds into the match, before the Demons answered with the next seven majors to ultimately set up the win.

“We’ve had first goals kicked against us before and you just go about your business and refocus and go again,” he said.

“We dropped off a little bit in the second half and they came at us and to the boys’ credit, we just held in there and stuck to our structures and we got over the line in the end, so that’s all you can ask for.”

Viney said coach Paul Roos’ message was simple at three quarter-time time.

“If we stick to our structures – we win,” he said.

“It shows that when we do it well against Carlton and Adelaide – we win. It was really just reinforcing the structure and reinforcing everyone’s role to play.”
