MELBOURNE’S poor run at Etihad Stadium continues, its inaccurate goalkicking proves costly and an ex-Demon racks up some game-best numbers against his former teammates … these are some of the stats to emerge from round 19’s ‘By the numbers’ …
- Melbourne has now lost 19 matches in a row at Etihad Stadium, with its round 19 win over the Western Bulldogs, when coached by Mark Riley, its most recent victory at Docklands.
- Melbourne’s score of 6.15 (51) was exactly the same as its round one margin against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium. The margins were also not too far apart. The Demons lost round one by 17 points and round 19 by 23 points.
- The Dees had two more scoring shots than the Lions: 21 to 19. But the Lions booted 11.8 to 6.15.
- The Demons tied the first term, won the second by five points, the third by two points and lost the final term by 38 points.
- Melbourne kicked 1.5 in both the second and third terms. It also registered 1.2 in the final quarter. Its best for the match was 3.3 in the opening term.
- The Lions booted six unanswered goals from the nine-minute mark until the 29-minute mark of the final term. In the final term, the Lions kicked 6.2 to 1.2 to set up their 23-point win.
- The Lions smashed the Demons in inside 50s, almost doubling them with 60 to 34.
- Nathan Jones had a team-best 30 disposals. Only Lion Tom Rockliff (32 possessions) had more touches for the match. Jones also had an equal match-high 14 contested possessions.
- Stefan Martin had a fine match against his former side, winning 24 disposals, including an equal game-high 14 contested possessions. He also had a match-best eight clearances. Mark Jamar had more hit outs with 31 to Martin’s 23.
- Tom Rockliff (32 dispoals) and Pearce Hanley (24) were ‘held’ to 56 touches this week, after accumulating 92 possessions between them against the Gold Coast Suns last round. Rockliff had 47 last week and Hanley had 45.
