EXCITING young midfielder Jordan Gysberts says the Demons are itching to take on reigning premiers Collingwood in Monday’s Queen’s Birthday clash at the MCG.

Gysberts said last Friday night’s victory over Essendon at the MCG was the sweetest moment he has tasted so far at Melbourne. He said the Demons are up for the challenge of taking on the reigning premiers.

“It’s the best win I’ve been involved in,” Gysberts said.

“Hopefully we can keep up our consistency - we’ve been a bit up and down this year.

“Everyone has been buzzing and excited for this weekend.”

Gysberts, who supported Collingwood before being drafted by Melbourne, is a huge admirer of 2010 Norm Smith Medalist Scott Pendlebury and Geelong dual premiership player Joel Corey. Collingwood great Nathan Buckley was also Gysberts’ hero growing up.

The tall midfielder is a similar type to Pendlebury and Corey and has studied them closely to hone his game.

“I watch them a bit and try and get little hints and tips around stoppages,” he said.

After receiving his second NAB AFL Rising Star nomination this round - his other came against Carlton in round 11 last year - Gysberts said the honour was recognition for his determination.

“It’s good to see some hard work pay off,” he said.

“Last year, I did every session up until I got injured.

“This year I had a really interrupted [pre-season], but I feel a lot better and my body is moving a lot better, the second year in the system.”
