CO-CAPTAIN Jack Grimes will miss the next two NAB Cup matches and return for the fourth and final week of the pre-season competition after scans revealed a much better result than first expected.

Grimes injured his shoulder during a training session on Wednesday afternoon at Gosch's Paddock.

But coach Mark Neeld confirmed on 3AW on Wednesday night that the defender/midfielder would be back before the start of the premiership season and Melbourne's round one clash against Brisbane Lions at the MCG on March 31.

“The scans are done and the results are in and there is minor [damage] and he’ll miss two weeks,” Neeld said.

“He’ll play NAB [Cup round] four.”

Neeld said he was pleased with the result, considering it was feared Grimes could miss an extended period.

“I’m not happy that Jack’s missing two games, but it’s better than missing a lot more than two,” he said.

The incident happened when Grimes went for a pack mark with teammates Sam Blease and Troy Davis. After colliding with his teammates, Grimes went down immediately and was quickly assisted by Melbourne doctor Dan Bates.
