First quarter

Jeremy Howe had the first shot at goal for the match and it looked set to be a promising start for the Demons.

But his kick registered a behind and from that point, the quarter turned sour for the Dees.

After Kieren Jack kicked the opening two goals, the Swans piled on a further five majors - including two from Josh Kennedy - to finish with seven for the quarter. The Dees added just three points and at quarter-time, Melbourne trailed by 40 points.

Second quarter

Things didn’t improve for the Demons, when the Swans added a further three goals to start the second term.

And when Irishman Tommy Walsh kicked his first AFL goal, the Swans had 10 goals to zip and a 59-point lead.

Melbourne finally opened its account at the 19-minute mark when Nathan Jones snapped truly. But by half-time, the margin was back to 59 points.

Syd Swans 11.4 (70) to Melb 1.5 (11)

Third quarter

Sydney’s dominance continued in the third term, when it booted another five goals. Kieren Jack, Lewis Jetta and Luke Parker all had three majors each by three quarter-time.

Former skipper Brad Green was Melbourne’s only goalscorer for the term, while the only highlight for the Dees came when Jeremy Howe soared over Heath Grundy to take arguably his best mark yet and one of the marks of the year.

By the final break, the Demons trailed by 86 points.

Syd Swans 16.9 (105) to Melb 2.7 (19)

Fourth quarter

Although Melbourne booted three goals for the term through Jones, who added his second, Colin Sylvia and Jamie Bennell, the damage had well and truly been done.

The Swans had already smashed the Demons and by the end the final margin was 101 points.

For the Swans, they recorded their sixth win of the season, and bounced back after a two-game losing streak, while Melbourne endured its eighth straight loss for the season.
