Gysberts out for four to six weeks
Midfielder Jordan Gysberts will miss the next four to six weeks with a broken jaw
Gysberts suffered the injury when he collided with Geelong VFL player Daniel Gibbs during the first quarter of Casey’s win over Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Saturday.
The 20-year-old was one of three Casey players, including future father/son prospect Jack Viney and Scorpion Wade Lees to suffer broken jaws in the match.
Football manager Josh Mahoney said the club is hopeful Gysberts will return early next month.
“Jordan had only just returned from an ankle injury, so the injury to his jaw is another challenge for him,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“Jordan had an operation on his jaw and he’s had two plates inserted.
“He’s now recovering at home and at this stage he’ll be four to six weeks away from resuming.”
Mahoney said former skipper Brad Green, who has been sidelined for the past three matches with a finger injury, is a chance to return to the VFL this round.
“Brad had a wire removed from his finger last week,” he said.
“He will participate in training this week and if his finger can handle the ball work, he will be available for selection at Casey this week.”
Rookie Leigh Williams, who last week was in an induced coma following a viral infection to the brain, is remarkably only two to four weeks away from returning.
Mahoney said Williams was making progress.
“Leigh Williams is receiving daily treatment in hospital and his conditioning is improving,” he said.
Big man Stef Martin (hip) and defender James Strauss (leg) will face fitness tests this round. First-year Demon Josh Tynan (foot) is another two to three away.
Ruckman Max Gawn (knee), utility Neville Jetta (ankle) and rookie Michael Evans (back) remain out long-term.
