MELBOURNE is in advanced talks to secure promising youngster Christian Salem to a new two-year contract extension.
Salem's existing contract at Melbourne was due to run out at the end of this season, but AFL.com.au understands the proposed deal will ensure he remains with the Demons through to 2017.
The Demons view the No.9 pick from the 2013 NAB AFL Draft as an important part of the club's future, joining an emerging midfield containing talented youngsters Dom Tyson, Jack Viney, Angus Brayshaw and Christian Petracca (once he returns from his knee reconstruction).
Salem managed 12 games in his debut year under Paul Roos in 2014 and showed his ability to perform under pressure, typified by his match-winning goal against Essendon in round 13.
The 19-year-old is expected to build on an impressive debut campaign to become an integral member of the Demons' side this season.
Salem is likely to relocate to half-back in 2015, with the Demons identifying his polished foot skills as a potential asset out of defence.
However, the long-term view of Salem playing through the middle of the ground suits Roos' and the club's plan of stockpiling midfield depth.
Salem's impending commitment is set to follow the lead of Brayshaw, who signed an extension until the end of 2018.
Captain Nathan Jones and forward Jay Kennedy-Harris have also recently re-signed.
