SANDRINGHAM needs Frankston to lose against Geelong on Saturday and then defeat North Ballarat on Sunday to ensure it plays off in this year's VFL finals series.

This will ultimately determine if any Melbourne players continue their season past round 22 in the AFL. Melbourne football operations manager Ross Monaghan said the scenario could be known before Sandy plays on Sunday.

"By the time they get to Sunday, they'll know whether they've made the finals or not and if they can make it – they must win," Monaghan told melbournefc.com.au.

Ruckman John Meesen (ankle) is out for the rest of the season.

Sandringham reserves will play Frankston in the elimination final at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday, as a curtain-raiser to the Zebras' final round clash against North Ballarat.

Monaghan said a few Melbourne-listed players could play for the Sandy reserves.

But youngsters Jake Spencer (glandular fever) and Tom McNamara (hamstring) won't play, while Trent Zomer (elbow) is still a chance to line-up.
