COACH Paul Roos says Melbourne’s poor recent record against St Kilda and at Etihad Stadium haven’t been addressed in the lead-up to Sunday’s clash against the Saints at Docklands.
Melbourne has lost its past 20 matches at Etihad Stadium, with its most recent win coming against the Western Bulldogs in round 19, 2007, when Mark Riley was coach. The Demons also haven’t beaten the Saints since its second elimination final win in 2006.
Roos said previous records were irrelevant.
“I wouldn’t even know [our recent record against St Kilda or at Etihad Stadium] to be honest. We don’t even look at past records,” he said.
“We’re continually moving forward as a footy club and [we’ve now got] different teams and different players.
Roos said every week was a challenge for the Demons and he was adamant his side was not taking St Kilda lightly.
“It doesn’t matter where we’re playing or who we’re playing … we know every game’s hard and we know we have to play really well to beat St Kilda,” he said.
“The times we go into games and we haven’t won against a [certain] team or won at a [particular] venue … that’s as a result of not being a good club for a number of years.
“It’s about working on the things we did poorly [the previous match] as a team and continuing the real positive themes from [last round]. That’s what the week’s all about for us, regardless of who we play.”
