MELBOURNE coach Dean Bailey says young forward Jack Watts is likely to retain his place in the side after an encouraging effort in the Demons' 29-point loss to West Coast at the MCG.

Playing his first game for the red and blue in season 2010, Watts finished with 15 possessions and five marks - two of them contested - in a performance that pleased his coach.

“Jack took a couple of marks and he should be available if he gets through training this week to play next week,” Bailey said.

But the performance of Watts - in only his fourth career game - was the only bright spot on a dark day for the Demons.

An angry Bailey said his side's effort was equally bad as its round one shocker against Hawthorn, when it suffered a 58-point loss to a side that failed to win its next six games.

“The Hawthorn game was our worst performance [but] this one - only the scoreboard difference was the difference between this one and the Hawthorn game,” he said.

“We overused the handball and West Coast applied the pressure and we turned it over - we didn’t switch the footy and we didn’t score.”

To make matters worse for Melbourne, Matthew Bate (ankle), Aaron Davey (nose) and Cameron Bruce (hamstring) are all in serious doubt for the Demons' clash against Port Adelaide next Saturday night in Darwin.

Bailey blamed poor skills in the midfield as the main reason for Melbourne's struggle to score.

The Demons kicked just six goals for the match,  including a paltry 1.5 in the second half when the game was in the balance.

“It would have been a very difficult place to play in our forward 50. Our movement in the middle of the ground was very ordinary and made it very difficult for any of our forwards to be able to mark the footy in our forward line,” he said.

“I think we lacked an opportunity to move it with any great speed. We played slow, played boring at times.”

After the Demons' recent good form, Bailey denied the younger players had got ahead of themselves and said the club's senior players also had to assess their performance.

“I think everyone was poor really across the whole board,” he said.

“I think the brunt should be across all players today. Last week was good, the young players played well - each week you get another opportunity to perform.”
