Todd Viney’s season assessment
Clint played a negating small defender role early in the season. He battled his way through the year with some niggling injuries, and missed a few games. Clint also spent some time in the VFL, but came back into the side late in the season and played the last five matches. He played as a run-with midfielder and did some really good jobs on West Coast’s Daniel Kerr and Gold Coast’s Gary Ablett. He finished the season with some really good form.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Barty was outstanding down back. He shut down Ben McGlynn, after he was dangerous early on in the match. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Clint was really solid early on and produced some courageous acts. He gave his all. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
Barty was solid and did his job on the dangerous small forwards. He lost a bit of momentum when he went off the field with a knock to his hip. But he returned and bounced back to produce a good game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Clint had an even game. He had 16 touches and his contested work was good. Clint managed to win some good one-on-ones and marks in the back 50. He also positioned himself well when the ball came into defensive 50. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
Clint had another even game. He defended really well one-on-one and once again provided some hardness at the ball. He continued his good form and this was because of his work-rate and intensity. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
Clint’s physicality was outstanding. His tackling was a highlight. He shut down Scott Thompson and won several 50/50 balls. It was also great to see him push forward and kick a goal. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Barty had his hands full with Brent Harvey. He stayed focused on the job at hand and gained great experience from the role he played. Overall, he was solid. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Clint was beaten early against Stephen Milne, but he fought back and negated him for the rest of the game. He switched the ball very well, but he needed to work hard on his decision-making skills. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
Injured: hip

AFL: Round 11 v Essendon
Injured: hip

AFL: Round 12 v Collingwood
Although his defensive game was good on Alan Didak, Clint made a few disposal errors that detracted from his game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle
Clint was solid in defence. He needed to assess his options when he used the ball. He missed a few targets we would expect him to hit. Mark Williams

VFL: Round 13 - Bye

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs (emergency)/VFL: Round 14 v Werribee Tigers
Clint played in the midfield and across half-back. His physicality and hardness was a feature of his game. He had nine tackles and his intent and effort couldn’t be questioned. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 15 v Box Hill Hawks
Clint worked hard. He didn’t have a lot of the ball early, but worked his way into the game. It was only his second game with Casey. He tried to find his feet and fit in with the chemistry of VFL footy, which is different to AFL. He worked hard, and played through the midfield, and a bit down back, which was important. He always put in. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 17 v Port Adelaide (emergency)

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Injured - hip

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats (emergency)/VFL: Round 18 v Geelong
Clint was arguably Casey’s best player. He worked hard to win the ball or defend, plus he was prepared to be super aggressive physically, which the majority of the side lacked. He never gave up and kept working through every minute of the match. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 20 v Carlton
Clint had some goals kicked on him defensively, but as always his work-rate and physicality was a highlight. His ball use was pretty good until the last quarter, where he turned over a few kicks. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 21 v West Coast Eagles
He effectively curbed the influence of the very dangerous Daniel Kerr. Clint could have been best on ground, had he finished his hard work by kicking goals. His spread, willingness to work and his hardness in and around stoppage was outstanding. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond
Clint did a great job on Trent Cotchin. It was a big job on a really good player. He stuck to his task all day and limited Cotchin’s effectiveness. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
Barty played an outstanding game on the very dangerous Gary Ablett and limited his possessions to 28, with 17 coming from the defensive part of the ground. Ablett had little influence on the game, or the result. Clint just continues to play his role for the team each week. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Clint did a great job on Travis Boak. As he had done in previous weeks, he played his role for the team and gave everything he had. Boak kicked two freakish goals, but was well held. Barty’s last month of the season was very good. Mark Williams
