AS DEBATE rages about his future, Jack Watts says he's determined to prove himself at Melbourne next season.

Demons coach Paul Roos said this week he hadn't made his mind up whether the 2008 No.1 draft pick would be at the club in 2016, claiming no player was guaranteed a spot as the club prepares for an active trade period.

However, Watts said his exit interview this week "went very well" and he wants to stick with the Dees.

"I don't think anyone can be 100 per cent confident, but I certainly hope so," he said at the AFL Players' Association MVP awards on Tuesday night.

"I see a really strong year next year for the Dees and I'd love to be a part of it and I've got things I need to improve on to keep up.

"I'll go away in the off-season and work on those things and hopefully have a really good year."

After axing Watts for the final round, Roos praised the 24-year-old for his strong middle part of 2015 when he contributed to wins over the Western Bulldogs, Geelong, the Brisbane Lions and Collingwood.

But the coach recently said he wants "a team of competitors" taking the field for round one next year – and that's where Watts has to get better.

"It was pretty simple, it was just the contest stuff wasn't quite there the last three or four weeks leading into it (being dropped)," Watts said.

"I've got to go and improve in this off-season and I'm confident I can do that and work my way back."

Watts played 20 games this season, booted 10 goals and averaged 16 touches.

The two games he missed were the round seven loss to Hawthorn after asking to be dropped and the round 23 win over Greater Western Sydney.

Watts said it was frustrating to missing out on the chance to impress in the final round against the Giants.

"You want to go out and prove something and you don't get the chance to do that when you miss out on the last game," he said.

"But that can fuel this off-season and going forward to 2016."

Watts, who has played 115 games since he was the top pick in 2008, said he didn't need any more certainty about his position for next season before he heads for an off-season break.

"I'm very comfortable. I don't need anything more than what I've got. I'm looking forward to a little break, relax a little bit and get away from it all," he said.
