MIDFIELDER Dom Tyson is a good chance to return for Melbourne’s Queen’s Birthday clash against Collingwood, according to coach Paul Roos.

Roos said Tyson, who has missed the past two matches with a knee injury, which had been troubling him for a few weeks, was likely to play.

“At this stage, I think he will [play], so hopefully [that’s the case]. He’s been an important player for us and he’s had a couple of weeks off,” he said on Roos’ Views.

“But what we learned from the Bulldogs game is that we tried to play really fit guys and that worked out really well. It’s always hard when you’re bringing in guys now, given the demands of the game.

“Jack [Viney] as a sub [last round] made it a bit easier, but we saw with Nev [Jetta in the same match] that it was pretty tough because it was a hot game and we had to sub him out. You’ve got to be mindful of the fitness levels and the demands of the game.”

Roos said everyone at the club needed to take responsibility for the team’s “lack of consistency”, but added that it was still going to take some time, given the squad was developing.

“We’ve just got to keep moving forward and that’s what the supporters are demanding and that’s what Melbourne people want – they want to see their team perform consistently,” he said.

“I don’t think Melbourne supporters expect us to win every week, but [the round three match against] Adelaide in Adelaide was a great example. We can still play well, but get beaten by a good team, as we did that day.

“But some of our performances against the better teams – I don’t think we’ve given our absolute best and that’s what we want to try and do this week.”

Roos said no player had been written off and that spots on the list had yet to be decided.

“I’ve seen guys’ performances change over a week, let alone 12 or 13 weeks,” he said.

“We’ve got to coach everyone really hard and we’ve got to make sure they’re really compliant with what we want them to do.

“It’s a natural attrition and people think that the coaches pick the team, but the players pick the team by their performances. The game demands certain requirements to be able to do it.

“As ruthless as it is, it’s really the players that really determine who stays on the list and who doesn’t stay on the list.”
