JAMES Harmes has had surgery on Monday to fix a broken bone in his hand suffered during last Saturday night’s two-point loss to Geelong Cats at GMHBA Stadium.
But general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said Harmes was still a chance to play against the Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Oval this Saturday night.
“James was involved in an incident where he broke his hand late in the game on Saturday night,” he told Melbourne Media.
“During the game, he came off and got his hand strapped and played on, which was a commendable effort.
“He’s gone in for an operation to fix the bone and have a plate inserted into his hand today (Monday).
“At this stage, with the operation going well and the wound healing, he’s still a chance to play his weekend against the Adelaide Crows.”
Harmes played a fine game against the Cats, running with Geelong skipper Joel Selwood and keeping him in check, before shifting onto fellow superstar Patrick Dangerfield.
Selwood finished with 16 disposals for the match – his lowest tally this season.
Harmes, 22, has played 61 matches for Melbourne, including every match this season.
He recently signed a three-year contract, keeping him at the club until at least the end 2021.
