A NEW park in Docklands will be named after Ron Barassi Snr, father of Ronald Dale Barassi.
Barassi senior played 58 games for the red and the blue, including his last game in the 1940 premiership before enlisting in the Australian Army and serving in North Africa, where he lost his life in the Battle of Tobruk in 1941.
The Ron Barassi Snr park follows the naming of the Jim Stynes pedestrian bridge over the Yarra in 2014 and highlights the Club’s links and strong association with the city whose name we share.
The opening event will take place on Saturday, 10 October at 10.30am. Minister for Planning Richard Wynne and Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle will be in attendance, as will Ron Barassi Junior.
The Minister and Lord Mayor will officially open the park and unveil signage recognising Ron Barassi Snr and his contribution as both a footballer and an ANZAC.
In addition to the official proceedings, Melbourne Football Club and Melbourne Victory will be running sports clinics for children at the park from 9.30am. There will also be a barbeque, fresh fruit and hot and cold drinks.
Ron Barassi Snr Park has been delivered through a partnership between the Victorian Government, Places Victoria and the City of Melbourne.
This is a free event and all Melbourne Football Club supporters are encouraged to attend.
