First quarter: Sydney Swans 2.6 (18) to Melbourne 1.1 (7)
Melbourne started positively when it registered the first two scores of the match – a rushed behind and then the first goal of the day through Christian Petracca.
But from that point, the Swans dominated the rest of the opening term with eight consecutive scores.
Fortunately for Melbourne, the home side was inaccurate on the scoreboard, booting 2.8.
The Swans kicked their first goal at the 17-minute mark via Josh Kennedy and then added four successive behinds, before Dean Towers added their second in time-on.
At quarter-time, Sydney led by 11 points.
Second quarter: Sydney Swans 4.8 (32) to Melbourne 2.3 (15)
The Swans made it three in a row, when Toby Nankervis kicked a goal just a minute in.
At the three-minute mark, Melbourne answered with its second for the match, courtesy of Dean Kent.
And when Lance Franklin notched up his 750th AFL goal at the nine-minute mark, it proved to be the only other major for the term.
A further four behinds were added, including two to Melbourne from Jack Watts and Bernie Vince.
At quarter-time, Melbourne trailed by 17 points.
Third quarter: Sydney Swans 6.13 (49) to Melbourne 3.6 (24)
The Swans landed the first four scores of the second half, yet managed just one goal via Franklin.
Although it gave the red and white a 26-point lead, it also kept Melbourne within reach.
And when Petracca slotted through his second, the visitors lifted. But misses to Bernie Vince and Sam Frost followed and although the margin was cut back to 18 points, it could’ve been more.
Consequently, when Franklin nailed his third, the Swans were back out to a four-goal lead.
Melbourne had one more opportunity late in the term, when Chris Dawes received a free kick, but his checkside shot for goal was punched through for a behind. At the final change, Melbourne trailed by 25 points.
Final quarter: Sydney Swans 12.14 (86) defeated Melbourne 4.7 (31)
Although the door was still slightly ajar for Melbourne entering the final term, it was quickly closed when it was literally raining goals in the final term for the Swans.
When Franklin booted his fourth goal at the six-minute mark, it was the start of a remarkable period for the home team.
Sydney piled on six goals in a row for the term to jump out to a 61-point lead.
Melbourne didn’t register its first score of the final term until the 19-minute mark when Jesse Hogan kicked a behind and then its first goal, which also came through the key forward at the 28-minute mark.
In the end, the Swans won by 55 points.
