JACK Viney says his side felt like it was in with a chance at three quarter-time against the Sydney Swans at the SCG on Sunday, before it fell away to lose by 55 points.
Trailing by 25 points at the final change, Viney said Melbourne believed it could win, despite the sloppy conditions, which marred the match. But when the Swans kicked six goals to one in the final term, they came away with a comprehensive victory.
“We felt like we were tracking reasonably OK, up until three quarter-time. We thought we were travelling all right and there were some things that we needed to change,” Viney told Melbourne TV.
“The last quarter was really disappointing. The [inside] contest and outside the contest, we got beaten in all facets of the game.
“When we got it in our forward line, it was coming out pretty quickly to score. We felt like we were OK around the contest and getting it forward, but we just weren’t making the most of our opportunities.
“We were looking for a big last quarter, because we felt like we were in it and then it was just disappointing to dish up that performance in the last [quarter].”
Viney said Sydney’s hardened bodies and experienced midfielders proved telling in the result.
“To Sydney’s credit, they’re an elite team and that’s (the midfield) their one wood – the contest stuff. But also, when they got it outside of the contest, they were able to move and shift the ball a lot better than we were,” he said.
“They ended up getting it in their forward line and kicking some easy goals.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t have the 22 players contributing and you know when you’re playing a side like Sydney, you need to have everyone playing a good game.”
Viney, who played his second match back after a fractured knucklebone, said it was on track.
“It’s good [as it’s been] a couple of weeks and then we’ve got a couple of weeks off, so hopefully I’ll come back after the bye and it’ll be cherry ripe,” he said.
