MISSING his first AFL-listed season with a knee injury was somewhat of a blessing in disguise, says Christian Petracca.
Although conceding it was a tough period, he said he learned plenty about himself and the game, which has helped him significantly in the early stage of his career.
Speaking after being named the round nine NAB AFL Rising Star, Petracca said rehab on his knee and his toe earlier this year had been a “bumpy and challenging road”.
“There is a lot of adversity and challenges I’ve had to overcome, especially last year and even this year with my toe. I feel like I’ve become a better person and more humble,” he said.
“It’s been a pretty frustrating 12 months with my knee, but it’s just good to be out on the park with the boys and it was a great win on the weekend [against the Brisbane Lions at the MCG]”
“The more games you play, the more confidence you get in your body and mind. My first game against St Kilda, I thought was pretty disappointing, but it’s really good to bounce back the last three and play some really good consistent footy.”
Petracca, who has now played four AFL matches and is averaging a touch more than 20 disposals per match, said he attended about 20 matches last year, when he would normally go to a handful.
“I’ve never done that in my life – I might go to about three a year,” he said.
“The more football you watch, the more knowledge you gain.
“Watching a club and watching your teammates play – it’s so much easier when you come in and fit in. You know who’s a left-footer and who is a right-footer and how they play.”
