BERNIE Vince says Melbourne is reaping the rewards of playing fast, exciting football.
Melbourne led all night against Richmond before kicking away in the final quarter to win by 33 points at the MCG on Sunday night.
Vince said the result was a credit to the team’s willingness to take the game on.
“I think as a group, the most exciting thing is just the speed of ball movement – we’re taking the game on, taking risks,” he told Melbourne TV.
“We’re going to make mistakes doing that but you’ve got to mop them up and we’ll get good reward for taking the game on.”
Richmond challenged Melbourne several times throughout the evening and were within three goals at the final change, before the Demons kicked away late.
Vince, who collected 23 disposals and booted three goals in his return from suspension, said Melbourne’s ability to respond each time stemmed from its belief in the game plan.
“We’re starting to play some really exciting footy and we knew that if we just stayed strong at the contest then we’d take it right up to them,” he said.
“We knew [it could take] right up until the last quarter or the last 10 minutes of the last quarter but we knew we’d get there.”
Having won two games in a row for the first time since 2011, Melbourne’s focus now turns to playing St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Vince said the Demons were already up for the next challenge.
“The belief’s right up there – we believe we can beat anyone,” he said.
“We can’t wait to play next week – we want the game to be tomorrow.
“So it’s just exciting week to week, we want to get out there and do it again.”
