AARON vandenBerg says it was “pretty scary” when Gold Coast key forward Tom Lynch had a kick after the siren during Sunday’s clash at the MCG.
Although Lynch’s difficult kick from 50 metres, tucked on the boundary line, just fell short – giving Melbourne a two-point win – vandenBerg said it was a tense final few moments.
“I actually thought we were going to come out and play some good contested ball [in the final quarter] and maybe run away with it, but they kicked a quick couple of goals and it was a little bit of panic mode for a while there,” he told Melbourne TV.
“We were starting to try and find a goal, but then we started to ease off and use the ball a little bit better.
“So it was pretty scary when [Tom] Lynch had that kick [after siren] on 50.”
vandenBerg, who kicked three goals in his best performance for the season, said Melbourne always had the confidence to win the match, despite having a sluggish start and some testing moments in the second half.
“We didn’t have the first quarter that we would have liked,” he said.
“But the group came in [at quarter-time] and was really positive – we knew exactly what we needed to do to get back into the game.
“We came out and did it – and we just needed to make sure we sustained that for the rest of the game.”
