MELBOURNE rookie Corey Maynard has been ruled out of this weekend's game after sustaining a significant concussion as a result of a crude bump from North Melbourne forward Lindsay Thomas in the VFL on Sunday.

Maynard spent Sunday night recuperating in hospital after being taken off on a stretcher following the heavy head knock in the first minute of the second quarter of the Casey Demons' game against Werribee at Hoppers Crossing.

Demons high performance manager Dave Misson said Maynard would have to pass concussion protocols before he was cleared to return to the field.

"Corey had a really significant head knock and he spent the night in hospital," Misson told melbournefc.com.au.

"He's already been ruled out this week and we'll just have to see how he progresses for next week, but it was a significant concussion."

Thomas is set to front the VFL Tribunal on Tuesday night, with the state league assessing the incident as careless conduct, with severe impact and high contact.

Midfielder James Harmes also spent some time in hospital on Sunday night after suffering a nasty eye injury.

After gathering nine first-quarter disposals, Harmes suffered the injury in the second quarter and he took no further part in the contest.

Harmes had stitches to close the wound but was back at the club and in good spirits on Monday.

The Demons are hopeful he will be OK to play against the Northern Blues on Sunday.

"It was an eye laceration. He won't do much early in the week but we expect him to try to train and play," Misson said.

Meanwhile, Demons midfielder Jake Melksham has accepted his one-game sanction after being reprimanded for two separate striking incidents in the game against Werribee.

Melksham would have come into the selection mix for the game against Adelaide on Saturday night after gathering 30 disposals and being listed as Casey's best player.

However, the suspension will prevent the former Bomber from playing at any level this weekend.
