MIDFIELDER Lily Mithen says that her team are yet to produce their best football.
Mithen, who was influential in Melbourne’s 32-point win over Adelaide Crows at Casey on Saturday night, said that it was an exciting prospect.
“We played some good footy today, but we’re still not playing to our best footy, which is the exciting bit,” she said.
“There’s good things to come hopefully.”
Melbourne’s second win comes after a strong pre-season, where the team continued to develop their game plan from the inaugural year of the competition.
The 19-year-old said it was the perfect start to their 2018 campaign.
“We drilled really well and we’ve been coached phenomenally over the pre-season,” Mithen said.
“It’s second nature for us to go out and play the way we want to play, but we’ve still got to build on that.
“We’ve only played eight quarters of footy together playing that way, so we’re going to continue to build.”
Mithen finished with 19 disposals – equal third most possessions for Melbourne – and seven tackles in the win against the Crows.
Despite the threat by the reigning premiers, it was business as usual for Mithen and her teammates.
“We came into the game knowing that they were going to be playing pretty angry, pretty ferocious, and we knew they were going to come out firing,” she said.
We had to combat that and just play to our game style, which I think we did really well in the end.
“It’s always good to beat the reigning premiers, and when we play like that, it’s pretty exciting – the girls are up and about.”
Speedster Aliesha Newman was dangerous up forward, impressing Mithen with a contender for goal of the year.
“That opening goal was phenomenal,” she said.
“She’s been great, and has continued to build on that confidence that she played with last year, and now she’s put some method behind it.
“She’s going to be a real weapon for us going forward.”
