MELBOURNE vice-captain Aaron Davey will miss the next six to eight weeks with a knee injury.

Davey jarred his knee against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium in round nine and subsequently missed last Friday night’s loss to Carlton.

Davey will undergo minor surgery on his left knee, after scans confirmed damage to cartilage in the lateral compartment.

The club hoped that with a short rest period, Davey’s knee would settle enough for him to keep playing. But this hasn’t been the case and surgery was deemed the appropriate action.

General manager of football Chris Connolly said it was disappointing for Davey and his teammates to have out of action.

“He is clearly an integral component to this team, and will be missed,” he said.

“Surgery is the best option for Aaron and, all things going well, we expect him to return to football in latter part of the season.

“Although it’s unfortunate for Aaron, we have a number of players performing well in the VFL who are capable of stepping up to make an impact at the AFL level.”
