HUMID conditions failed to stop Melbourne during its first main training session in Maroochydore on Wednesday morning.
The Demons hit the track for a tough three-hour slog, working hard on both their fitness and craft.
Gutsy defender Neville Jetta welcomed the hit-out after initially arriving on the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday morning.
“It was good to finally get the first session underway and finally completed,” Jetta told Melbourne Media.
“The boys love getting up here over the past three or four years and really start to hone in on our game plan and getting ready for games.”
Training under the Queensland sun poses a variety of challenges for the club, but Jetta is confident the benefits will be evident when the boys take the field in 2019.
“Being able to execute our game plan under high fatigue is something that will hold us in good stead going into the season,” he said.
While the intense sessions will no doubt pay off, the boys also need to ensure they are taking care of themselves off the field.
“We try to prepare the best we can – hydration, sleep, diet,” Jetta said.
“So we do the best things that we can to make sure we’re ready to go out there and train and perform.”
Jetta has some plans to avoid the sun and enjoy his down time during the week up North.
“Obviously trying to stay out of the heat, there’s some nice beaches around here, and really making sure that we’re in a good space both as a team and individually,” he said.
“So just doing everything we can to prepare to perform and treat every session like it’s a game.
“I’ll be doing that and I’m sure 40 other boys will be doing the same thing.”
Melbourne is just two days into its Maroochydore camp, with the club not returning home until next Tuesday.
