THE MELBOURNE players had a rare opportunity on Wednesday, when it had a skill-based touch session in the MCG change rooms.

The 90-minute session also included divisional meetings with their respective backline, midfield and forward line coaches.

Football Manager Josh Mahoney said it was a great opportunity to mix up training, particularly at the home of football.

“We essentially moved our usual training program over to the MCG and utilise the change rooms,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

Players were also required to undergo a medical screening. Each player had a medical check as a requirement before Melbourne’s season opener against Port Adelaide at the MCG on Sunday.

“We think it is important as we have 14 new players on our list and potentially seven to eight players, who will play their first game for the club,” Mahoney said.

“To be able to come into the change rooms and familiarise themselves with the setup is important in the lead up to round one.

“It is probably a once off event. It is always a good to have the option to come across to the MCG and that’s the benefit of our relationship that we have built up with the MCC.

“We have got the ability to utilise these facilities and we are appreciative of that and we will make the most of it when we get a chance to use them.”
