Speaking post-match, after he was among Melbourne’s best with three goals in its 25-point win over Greater Western Sydney at Manuka Oval, Howe said the team’s first non-Victorian win for the season was another step in the right direction.
“We haven’t had much luck or played really well in interstate games,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“We came here and really wanted to have a crack at these boys, and practice our interstate games.
“We really wanted to get a taste of a win on the road heading into next year.”
Howe said Melbourne was pleased with its opening three terms and early in the final quarter when it led by 44 points, but he conceded that it was frustrated by its finish, when GWS kicked five goals to two in the final term.
“The first half especially was how we wanted to play,” he said.
“We came out at them and put the pressure on and created the turnovers. We got it inside 50 and scored efficiently, but in the final term, we played around with the ball a bit and we didn’t get it into our forwards.
“When we went long - that’s when we looked dangerous. We’ll have a look at it. It’s a shame about the finish, but we’re still happy with the win.”
