Casey’s VFL coach, Taylor Whitford, provided an in-depth analysis of each AFL-listed player’s performance from Round 9’s 13-point loss to Sandringham, highlighting their contributions and growth on the field.

Whitford also took the opportunity to commend a few standout VFL players who were instrumental in the team’s performance on Sunday.

His insights comprehensively look at the players’ development and the team's dynamic, highlighting the synergy between the AFL and VFL levels within the Casey Demons.

Andy Moniz-Wakefield (33 disposals, 17 kicks, six marks, four tackles)

“Andy had another exciting performance and we’re starting to see some real improvement in his game. His ability to take the game on and challenge the opposition's defence was exciting. He used the ball well and was really influential in the game for us. Andy’s next steps are in his defensive consistency and reliability.”

Matthew Jefferson (5 goals, 11 disposals, five marks)

“I was really pleased for Jeffo. All the work he’s put into himself over the last few months was coming together. He was a threat both in the air and on the ground, finishing with five marks, and numerous times, was able to bring a contest for us ahead of the ball. He had eight shots on goal and is becoming a dependable player for our VFL team.”

Kynan Brown (21 disposals, 11 kicks, seven tackles)

“Kynan had another really solid performance, and we are starting to see real consistency in his game. His work rate was really high as that small forward, consistently helping our team’s defence whilst having an impact ball in hand. Importantly he was still able to play some midfield time, allowing him to showcase his contest work and developing his stoppage craft.”

Kolton Tholstrup (24 disposals, 15 handballs, five marks)

“Kolt returned to the team following being an emergency the week prior. He played some big minutes as a forward, which is invaluable for his experience and development as a player. He showed a real understanding of the role and one we are hoping he can continue to develop in the coming weeks.”

Will Verrall (19 disposals, three marks, three tackles, 14 hitouts)

“Will’s ruck craft and understanding is coming along nicely, and he showed he can do more and match it with a bigger, more experienced player, in Tom Campbell. The development for Will is when the game goes on, fatigue sets in, and he continues to make good decisions and impact the game by giving our mids first use.”

Oliver Sestan (12 disposals, nine kicks, six marks, three tackles)

“It was a quieter day for Oli, compared to last week, regarding his overall numbers and scoring impact. However, his work rate and patterning as a forward was still strong. He was able to still win his contests and provide defensive pressure in the forward 50, which is pleasing. Oli will be looking for consistency in the weeks ahead around the fundamentals of his game and his finish on goal.”

Jed Adams (10 disposals, eight kicks, six marks)

“Jed had a great battle on his hands, mainly playing on Tim Membrey, who is quite an experienced AFL forward. Jed had some really good moments, especially in the second half, he was able to win the ball back for us a lot and won some key one-on-one contests. These are the matchups that will support Jed in his development as a key defender looking to be ready to play AFL footy.”

Bailey Laurie (2 goals, 25 disposals, 14 kicks, five tackles)

“Bailey continued his strong year at VFL level. He played as an inside mid all day, exposing him to some good stoppage craft and contest work against high-calibre players. His work rate was really high, and he was able to get back and support the defence while also finishing two classy goals.”

Jack Billings (25 disposals, 13 kicks, two tackles, five clearances)

“Jack returned for his first VFL game of the year and was a great addition to us. His leadership and experience were invaluable for both our AFL and VFL-listed players. Jack played on the wing and up forward. His work rate was exceptional; he just ran all day, both in defence, helping us defend Sandringham’s ball movement and supporting our offence.”

VFL Players to watch:

Mitch White (2 goals, 38 disposals, eight marks, five tackles, ten clearances)

“An outstanding performance from our captain on the weekend. The numbers that he produced were enormous, but it’s the leadership and support he is giving our young group that makes me so proud. We’re lucky to have such leaders at our club.”

Ryan Valentine (9 disposals, five kicks, three marks, four tackles)

“Playing a new role down back it was Ryan’s best performance on the weekend. Against some quality forwards, he showed he could do more and match it in the air, taking several intercept marks whilst rebounding many attacks.”

The Dees’ focus swiftly shifts to the upcoming challenge against the Coburg Lions this Saturday at Piranha Park. With the first bounce scheduled for 1:05 PM, Coach Taylor Whitford and his squad are gearing up for another intense battle.
