Todd Viney’s season assessment
Jamie was in and out of form for a big part of the year. Part of his problem is that he’s got a lot of flexibility in his game. He can play forward, mid or as a small, rebounding defender. Later in the year, we were really pleased with his work as a negating defender, so we’d like to try and settle him down in one particular role. We were pleased with the way he finished the season, but like a lot of our players, he needs to get stronger in the pre-season. Overall, he is developing nicely.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’DonnellJamie was very lively and it was great to see him in form. He kicked a fantastic goal on the run after taking the game on. He also hit targets with precision. It was pleasing to see him do well. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Jamie produced some good pressure acts, but we need him to be more involved in the game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
Jamie was very lively. He did some very good things and played in front. Because he got in front regularly, he got access to the ball and was able to be involved in several important passages of play. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Jamie was fantastic on the wing. He provided great rebound and attack inside 50. He also spread well, which helped us move the ball out of our defensive 50. Jamie’s positioning on the wing was very good and he played his game well. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 - West Coast Eagles
Jamie’s in the team to tackle and chase, and he plays his role each week. He missed two opportunities to kick goals which would have allowed him to have more impact on the game. Mark Williams

VFL: Round 6 v Northern Bullants
Jamie was probably our best performer. He played half-forward and half-back. He really showed some spark and gave us some run. So that was pleasing for a guy coming back from Melbourne. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Jamie started as a sub and came on in the second half. We see glimpses of his attributes - his speed, agility and ability, but he needs to get to the fall of the ball. He is not far away from good form. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda (emergency)

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
Jamie did a really good job on Jeff Garlett. Although Garlett ended up kicking two goals, Jamie stuck to his task all night. One of Garlett’s goals came late in the final quarter. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 11 v Essendon
Hopefully this was a watershed match for Jamie - he needs to realise that when he has the ball, he’s hard to catch. His rebound off half-back was fantastic, and several times he was very good with his run and carry. His speed and disposal were a highlight. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 12 v Collingwood
Jamie had a quiet game. He didn’t have enough influence or provide enough rebound from defence. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle
Jamie was quiet again. He had little impact on the match. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 14 v Richmond
Jamie had a reasonable game. Defensively he was good, but we want to see more of his attacking game. We need to see him rebounding off half-back, which is one of his strengths, as well as more involvement in our counter attack. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs
Jamie had an average game. He wasn’t involved enough in the play, and he had minimal impact. He was subbed off late for Blease. Mark Williams

VFL: Round 15 v Box Hill Hawks
Jamie had 15 possessions playing as a half-forward, which is a really good outcome, and not only his possession rate - he tackled, he went back with the flight of the ball and did some really good spoils and contests, which was pleasing, because that’s how he contributes. He played his role for the team. I was really pleased with him - I gave him a good rating. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 16 v Frankston
Jamie did a few nice things, but I felt that he may have struggled on the narrow ground.  He had twelve touches, but he definitely had more impact the week before. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Jamie came on as sub, and had two possessions. At that stage, it was very hard to get involved in the game. He must continue to build on his work ethic and impact in games. Mark Williams

VFL: Round 18 v Geelong
For a senior player, Jamie didn’t do enough with only nine touches for the game. He spent some time in the midfield during the second half. He tried to impact with six team acts, but had a disappointing game. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 19 v Sandringham
We put Jamie in the back line, so he had to work pretty hard. He was determined to make a statement, and he did that with his run from his defence, his attacking play and his overall approach. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 20 v Coburg Tigers
Jamie was good. He had 15 touches, kicked one goal and had four team acts. He was thrown around a bit - from the wing, to defence and up forward. He made a contribution in each area. But only one touch in the last quarter was a concern. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond
Jamie did a great job on Robin Nahas. He held him to 11 disposals. Jamie’s defensive game was solid. His positioning was good, and it was great to see him put his head down and play his part for the team. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
Jamie was defensively very good. He competed strongly in the air and at ground level. He was rarely beaten one-on-one. His rebound off half-back was exciting and started many of our scoring counterattacks. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Again, JB was very solid in defence, beating several opponents. Jamie’s offensive play needs to be his focus as, when he attacks, the game breaks open for us and we usually score. Mark Williams
