ELIZA McNamara and Maeve Chaplin have signed contract extensions with the Demons, which will see them remain at Melbourne until at least 2026 and 2027 respectively.

The pair shone throughout the 2024 season, both playing impactful roles that helped to turn games in Melbourne’s favour.

AFLW List Manager Todd Patterson praised the dynamic duo for their continued commitment to the Demons.

“Both Lizey and Maeve represent the power of hard work, dedication and persistence through setbacks that professional athletes can face,” Patterson said.

“These players have each endured their own physical and mental hardships but have continued to train and play with grace and humour.

“They are perfect examples of what Demon Spirit means in our team and are a key part of our next wave of leaders, who are determined to drive the standards required to see us return to finals football.

“We are excited to see what they will continue to bring to this club in the coming years.”

Both McNamara and Chaplin played their best seasons to-date in 2024, and have continued to develop and elevate their leadership capabilities.

McNamara is renowned for her running ability and showcased her trademark endurance in ten games this season.

Across the year, she averaged 22.2 disposals, 391 metres gained, and 5.5 tackles, cementing her place as a core part of Melbourne’s powerhouse midfield.

Despite enduring a painful broken nose in Round 5, McNamara only missed one game and returned to the squad with her usual upbeat attitude.

Chaplin, with only 32 games under her belt, has become an integral part of the Demons’ backline.

In 2024, she played all eleven games, averaging 13.6 disposals, 2.8 tackles, 5.2 contested possessions, and 6.7 intercepts.

Her tackling ability and chase-downs were particularly illustrious, and she impressed coaches with her ability to direct and communicate with less experienced players.

She was rewarded for her break-out season with a nomination to the 2024 All-Australian squad, an amazing achievement for the 22-year-old.

The contract announcement comes following the news that thirteen other Demons have put pen to paper and committed to the red and blue.
