MELBOURNE has received a first round compensation selection for the loss of key defender/forward James Frawley.

The AFL confirmed on Monday evening that Melbourne had gained pick No.3 in the November NAB AFL Draft.

Earlier on Monday, Frawley joined Hawthorn after exercising his right as a free agent.

But Melbourne also has the option of using selection No.3 in the current trade period, which started on Monday.

At the moment, Melbourne has selections No.2 and now No.3.

Frawley played 139 matches for the Demons from 2007-14, after being selected at No.12 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft.

Earlier on Monday, the Demons claimed Glenelg’s Billy Stretch – the son of Melbourne 1987 best and fairest winner Steven – as a father-son selection.

Adelaide bid its second round pick (No.30) on Stretch, which was then matched by Melbourne with its third round selection (No.40).

It means the Demons are now bound to select Stretch in the November NAB AFL Draft with their third round selection.

Melbourne still also has a second round selection, which stands at selection No.23.
