The Melbourne Football Club, in partnership with South East Juniors Football League and AFL Victoria, recently had their annual come and try it day for girls aged 12-17 at Casey Fields.
Melbourne player and crowd favourite Jordie McKenzie, who is also the South East Juniors ambassador, was in attendance. Sharing his story and love of the game, McKenzie spoke of the huge importance of “having fun”, and was on the ground to help the girls with their skills and drills.
A great turn out of young potential footballers enjoyed the day, with many signing up to play local football within the Casey region.
Victorian Women’s Football League star, Kara Donnellan, passed on some tips and advice to the girls. Her story is the ideal inspiration, showing that young women can go from youth girls footy right through to represent their state, and possibly achieve All Australian status, as Donnellan herself has done in recent years.
Each girl who attended the try it day took home a Demons pack, complete with stickers and posters from the South East Juniors and the Melbourne Football Club, as well as the spark to possibly further take on the game in the future. We look forward to their involvement in coming seasons.
