THE BOARD of the Melbourne Football Club has sought Garry Lyon’s involvement in the Club and Garry has agreed to support Jim and the Club.

Garry will return to the Club on a consultative basis to assist the Board for the remainder of the 2011 season.

Garry’s primary purpose will be to act as a liaison between the Board and the Football Department and to make recommendations regarding the football department’s current status and future development.

Garry will start working with the Club immediately.

A time frame for how long Garry will be involved has not been determined. Garry will spend time working with the players and staff to gather the information he needs to make these recommendations.

Garry will also be involved in the process to select the next senior coach.

Jim Stynes said, “I am very grateful to Garry for helping the Club. He is an incredibly talented football mind, a passionate Demon and a powerful member of the football community and I’m sure our members and supporters will be rapt to see Garry’s return”

Garry said, "It is important to remember that since Jim came to the Presidency, debt has been cleared, sponsorship is up, membership is up, there are outstanding new training facilities at AAMI Park and a new training base at Casey. The Club has worked hard with positive results off the field but there is still plenty of work to be done and everyone at the club needs to acknowledge that. The most important part of a footy club, the Football Department needs a hand at the moment and that's where I will endeavour to help."

Garry Lyon played 226 games for Melbourne between 1986 and 1999 and was Club captain between 1991 and 1997.

Garry was a regular All Australian and Victorian representative and Club Best and Fairest winner in 1990 and 1994.  Lyon is also a member of the Club’s Team of the Century and Hall of Fame.
