MELBOURNE Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of premiership player Bernie Massey.
Massey will be farewelled at 11.25am on Tuesday June 27, with the livestream of the service available for viewing here.
Massey had played a significant part in Melbourne’s history since first joining the club in 1960.
Donning the No.37 for 99 senior games, Massey was known for being a reliable full back and representing the most games played by a Melbourne player without scoring a goal – staying true to his defensive roots.
Massey was on Melbourne’s list for four seasons before gaining a regular place in the senior side, which came with perfect timing in 1964, becoming a member of the premiership side and cementing himself in Demon history.
He played on for another three seasons, before hanging up his playing boots and pursuing his second passion - in coaching.
Following his retirement, Massey chose to keep his connection to the Demons, coaching Melbourne’s Reserves as well as assisting senior coach Ian Ridley in the early 1970s.
A memorable coaching moment for Massey included the 1971 night grand final in which he led the Demons to success, taking the reins while Ridley was overseas.
After years of dedication to the red and blue, Massey was honoured with Melbourne Life Membership in 1968, as well as being named a ‘150 Hero’ of the club in 2008.
The club extends its deepest sympathies to Massey’s family, friends and teammates at this sad time.
Players will wear black armbands during Thursday’s match against Geelong in recognition of Massey’s contribution to the club.
