Joel Smith has received a four year and three-month period of ineligibility in connection with five Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) under the Australian Football Anti-Doping Code.
Smith’s suspension was agreed upon by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Sport Integrity Australia (SIA), and the AFL with Smith.
Under the terms of the suspension, Smith is prohibited from participating in any sports that have adopted a World Anti-Doping Code compliant anti-doping policy until 9 January 2028.
“We respect the decision made by Sport Integrity Australia and the AFL, following their extensive investigation,” Melbourne General Manager of AFL Football Performance Alan Richardson said.
“Prior to the conclusion of the investigation, the club and Joel had agreed to part ways at the end of his contract, which officially concluded on October 31st.
“Despite not being an active member of our football program for the past 12 months, Joel has been a part of our club for a decade, and we acknowledge his football contribution during this time.
“It is important that as a club we learn from this experience. As a result of the initial violations asserted against Joel, we have taken steps to enhance our education in this area, on top of what was already provided by the club. This includes an increase in facilitated education sessions with our players, which will be an ongoing commitment for the club.
“We will continue to educate our playing group about their responsibilities as members of society and their choices, both on and off the field.”
Smith played 42 games across nine seasons with the club.
