MELBOURNE has added further talent to its AFLW list, signing Saraid Taylor as a replacement player for the upcoming season.
The 183cm key defender joins the Demons having impressed for Port Melbourne in the VFLW in recent months, following a stint on Richmond’s rookie list in 2022.
Melbourne AFLW List Manager Todd Patterson said Taylor, who arrives with a strong basketball background, will continue to grow in the red and blue.
“Saraid was lucky enough to get a crash course in AFLW at Richmond last season and has continued her development strongly, showing great progress at Port Melbourne VFLW,” Patterson said.
“We see Saraid continuing to develop her game in defence, where her competitiveness, speed and athleticism provide a great platform to build around.”
Taylor’s opportunity comes as Sammie Johnson, who welcomed baby Luca into the world in April, works through her return to full fitness under the AFL’s Pregnancy Policy.
“We were thrilled to welcome Luca to the Melbourne family, and for both Sammie and Harley to become first time parents,” Patterson said.
“In order to allow Sammie to recover with no pressures, the AFL Pregnancy Policy provides us with the opportunity to sign a replacement player for the entirety of the upcoming season.
“We’re pleased to be able to offer this to Saraid, while simultaneously supporting Sammie through her recovery journey, and with the opportunity to return to play when she is fit and able to this season.”
