Bennell's season over
Melbourne's Jamie Bennell will miss the rest of the season after doing his ACL against Fremantle
MELBOURNE has confirmed that 22-year-old Jamie Bennell has suffered an ACL injury and will miss the rest of the season.
Bennell was involved in a marking contest deep in the Demons forward line during the third quarter and fell to the ground.
The 22-year-old limped from the ground assisted by two trainers and went straight up the race.
Melbourne coach Mark Neeld said the injury was disappointing news for the club and Bennell.
"Unfortunately for Jamie we've been told he has done his ACL," Neeld said. "That is part of our game and there is a fair bit of emotion that goes with that, a young player trying to find his way in the game, his knee is smashed."
Neeld also confirmed that ruckman Mark Jamar - substituted out of the game at quarter time after missing the previous two weeks with a calf injury - had again suffered a calf injury to the same leg.
"He was fine going into the game, [he] trained fully all week and did everything that was asked of him," Neeld said. "[Then] 10 minutes into the game he came off and said 'I've hurt my calf'. It's not really the news you want to hear from your ruckman 10 minutes into the game but that is life."
The extent of the injury was unknown.
The injury to Bennell adds to the tail of woe for the Demons, who have lost Mitch Clark, Clint Bartram and Aaron Davey to season ending injuries in recent weeks.
Bennell has played 56 games for the Demons since making his debut in round 1, 2009. It was just his sixth game in 2012 having spent most of the season playing with the Casey Scorpions in the VFL.
