MELBOURNE president Jim Stynes says a recent gathering of some of its past presidents for a photo opportunity was another key step to rebuilding the club.

The picture, displayed in the Herald Sun, featured Stynes and past presidents Wayne Reid, Stuart Spencer, Joseph Gutnick, Gabriel Szondy and Paul Gardner.  Stynes said the return of Gutnick was particularly pertinent after his exit from the club in 2001.

"Obviously a lot of water has gone under the bridge since Joseph [was at the club] – it's been eight years," Stynes said at Melbourne's season launch lunch at the MCG on Friday.

"What we were trying to do is make all of the presidents feel welcome, because they've put in a lot of time and energy and money and you leave or someone pushes you out.

"You can find it very difficult to come back and feel comfortable and passionate about your team.

"I just wanted to get them together and say: 'we're all in this together'."

Stynes, good naturedly, added he has not asked the wealthy Gutnick for money, but added if he wants to donate "bloody hell, we'll take it".

The 1991 Brownlow Medallist said the rebuilding of Melbourne would be achieved via its members and not a crusader. He added the club would also accept nothing less than a competitive effort each week on the playing field this year.

"We just can't present ourselves in this competition the way we did last year," Stynes said.
