Strong contest but work to do: Stinear

Hear from Narrm's senior coach Mick Stinear following the team's Round 3 win

NARRM’S first quarter blitz has set up its third straight win for season seven.

The Demons’ opening term saw them boot six unanswered goals while restricting St Kilda’s scoreboard impact completely.

The hot start to the match gave Narrm the early lead and despite not scoring a major for the remainder of the game, the Demons finished the day with the four points.

Following the win, Narrm’s senior coach Mick Stinear said the group was pleased with the overall performance, considering it an improvement upon their Round 2 display.

“We’re happy because we see it as progress.” Stinear said.

“Against North [Melbourne] we were a bit up and down with our contest work and today we wanted to base everything around the way we competed.

“Our ability to win the ball and hunt the opposition when they had it, so we felt like we were more predictable in that space.

“If we can keep having that as the core part of our game and what we bring each week, then we’ve got six or seven weeks left to keep trying to get the other parts of our game in shape.”

The Demons led the Saints in contested possessions (122 - 89) and inside 50s (33 -15) but were unable to capitalise on these opportunities, kicking seven points in the final three quarters.

Stinear determined that the team's re-entry to the forward line made it difficult to use their inside 50s to their advantage.

“We wanted to start well and be strong around the contest and I feel like we achieved that.” Stinear said.

“But then we just didn’t really adjust after that [first quarter]. Their contest game and pressure lifted, and we kept trying to force things instead of thinking our way through it.

“It was good that for most of those last three quarters we still had good time in our forward half, so there was a lot still going right…we need to get better at getting more reward for effort.

“We had some good looks on re-entry, so our forwards were putting pressure on, our backs and mids were sitting out able to get the turnover but then we just sent it back to where it came from rather than changing a lane and getting a better look at goal.

“We were happy with our contest game for today, but we’ve got some work to do on rewarding the hard work off the back of it.”

Narrm will now have a seven day turnaround and will spend the week preparing for its Round 4 clash against Brisbane Lions and its official return to Casey Fields.

For the duration of AFLW Indigenous Round, the Demons will be rebranded as the Narrm Football Club. Narrm is the Aboriginal name for Melbourne which comes from the Woi Wurrung language, spoken by the traditional owners of the city and its surrounds.
