As the clock ticks down towards Round One, an extra - and much loved - Melbourne Football Club figure will be seen standing beside the team, ready to hand the match ball over to the umpire.  Once this ceremony is complete, Season 2012 will be ready to kick off in style.

Decked out in his new Club blazer, No. 1 ticket holder Robert Flower will be that person.  An ever popular figure on the MCG from the time of his senior debut to the current day, Flower is delighted to be involved in getting his beloved Melbourne’s season off to a good start.  ‘I’m always honoured to be part of the Club, and it’s a great chance to start the season with a fresh slate.  I’m really honoured to be asked to do that, especially now that Jimmy’s not here to do it.’

There is no doubt that memories of Stynes will be fresh in the minds of all Melbourne, and Flower will be on the arena as a minute of applause resounds throughout the stadium to honour the Irishman.  With the presence of Stynes always vivid, and with Flower a central part of proceedings, the season is set to have a special and heartfelt beginning.  But, questioned as to whether or not he would take the ball for a spin down the wing, Flower laughs.  ‘If only!  Maybe I could head off and kick a couple of early goals.’

While - sadly for many - there is no chance of that, there is good humour and camaraderie, even with the sorrow of Stynes’ passing.  That is the best of Melbourne, and that is the way the season starts.
