AFTER being handed a one-week suspension by the leadership group, Steven May has addressed an incident that took place on Sunday night.
“[I’m] just extremely disappointed,” May told Melbourne Media.
“I know I’ve let a lot of people down, especially myself and the footy club, through uncharacteristic actions.
“I’ve done a lot of work to try and build respect and trust at the footy club, and I’m disappointed these actions don’t reflect that.
“Just a bad mistake, a bad error of judgement, [which] unfortunately has consequences.”
May’s ban came after he consumed alcohol while under the concussion protocols, which means he will miss Melbourne’s Round 13 clash with the Magpies.
And he knows this mistake is letting his supporters down.
“There’s nothing I can really say, it’s all about actions and what I do going forward,” he said.
“I know they’ll be extremely disappointed – our fans and supporters have been huge fans of mine and have backed me in.
“I feel really apologetic to them – they’ve always had my back.
“Me not being out on the field is letting them down, letting the team down.
“It’ll be hard to watch the game knowing I’m responsible for not being out there.
“The only thing I can do now is get back to working hard, get back in the team, and continue this great start to the season we’ve had.
“And hopefully have an impact not only on-field but off-field, and go towards another premiership and have another attack at the finals.
“My teammates are obviously disappointed with me, but they know that it was a bad error of judgement and it wasn’t to disrespect them or our values, which I’m really strong – hold those really high.
“The hard work’s going to come in the next six to 12 months where I prove my worth and how committed I am to the footy club.”
While out on Sunday night, May had an altercation with teammate Jake Melksham, but says that hasn’t impacted their relationship at all.
“We’re really good mates, we have a lot of love for each other,” he said.
“Sometimes guys can get a little bit competitive with the banter and go a little bit overboard.
“We certainly made an error of judgement in that time.
“We certainly didn’t mean for any of this to come back on the footy club.
“We’ve told our teammates we’re all fine – don’t feel like you have to pick sides or anything because we’re still good friends.
“It was just a silly decision that we made and deeply regret already.”
