AS MELBOURNE prepares to embark on its third consecutive AFLW finals campaign, AFL premiership player Alex Neal-Bullen had some words of wisdom to share with the group.

And Sarah Lampard, a member of the Demons’ leadership squad, took plenty of lessons away from the chat.

“I think the first one was to stay in the moment over these next couple of weeks,” Lampard told Melbourne Media.

“We’ve kind of had an unusual lead into the Prelim – we’ve had like a pre-Prelim two-week bye, which is pretty unheard of.

“So, the first message was to stay in the moment and enjoy this next week and a half, and the second one was just to play our role over this time.

“So, play our role at training and then play our role in the Prelim next weekend.”

Neal-Bullen, who provided some advice to the AFLW program earlier in the season as well, was a pivotal factor in Melbourne’s 2021 success, setting a great example out on the field.

“Watching them go through their finals series last year was incredible,” Lampard said.

“But I think more so we just draw confidence from the form that we’ve already had over this season.

“But then be inspired by how they’re playing and what they’ve done in the past.”

After a COVID interruption delayed the first round of the AFLW finals series, the Demons have had to wait an extra week before preparing for their home Preliminary Final.

And while there has been training aplenty in that time, a hit of mini golf on Monday night proved to be an important bonding opportunity for the squad.

“I think as Nibbler said, just stay in the moment and enjoy these times that we have with each other,” Lampard said.

“It is a pretty bizarre scenario but it’s also a really cool position that we’re in and we’re really lucky to be here as well.”

As announced on Thursday evening, this will be the first official AFLW match to ever be held at the MCG, with the Demons preparing to host the winner of Saturday’s clash between Brisbane and Collingwood.
