After a goalless second term, the Swans booted three goals to two, gaining a 26-point lead at the final break.
 
Dom Tyson and Matt Jones were Melbourne’s goalkickers, as Sydney co-captain Kieren Jack booted his second to become the first multiple goalscorer for the match.
 
Christian Salem had his first run in the AFL, after he replaced Neville Jetta, who was subbed out. Adam Goodes, who started as Sydney’s substitute, also came on for Lance Franklin, who went off with an injury to his right knee.

Final quarter: Syd 9.15 (69) d Melb 5.8 (38)
 
Just three goals were added in the final term, as the Swans won by 31 points.
 
Salem kicked Melbourne’s only major – and his first AFL goal – at the 10-minute mark.
 
Ben McGlynn and Tom Derickx kicked the Swans’ two goals for the term.
