FOUR-TIME premiership player and much-loved Demon John Lord has passed away, aged 84.
A member of the 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1964 premiership teams, Lord was a larger-than-life character, who was highly regarded among the Melbourne faithful.
He played 132 games and kicked 80 goals in a career that spanned nine seasons, and was part of the most memorable era in the club’s history.
After initially being linked to Geelong, Lord followed in his father, John Lord Snr’s, footsteps, signing with Melbourne in 1954. He played two games in the Thirds before working his way onto the senior list two years later.
An opening-round debut in 1957 lead to his first taste of Premiership success – he was regarded as one of the best players in the Grand Final side of that year, dominating at centre halfback.
With the No.4 that was made famous by Norm Smith on his back, Lord went on to achieve the ultimate success on three more occasions, switching between a variety of positions throughout. He was known for his elite marking skills and goal sense.
Following his retirement in 1965, Lord was awarded Life Membership of the club, and became heavily involved with Melbourne’s Past and Present Players’ and Officials’ Association.
He was also named a ‘Hero’ of the club during its 150th celebrations in 2008, while his love of the game even saw him take up a role as a MCC Tour Guide.
The Melbourne Football Club extends its deepest sympathies to John’s family and friends at this very sad time.
Players will wear black armbands during Sunday's match against Gold Coast in recognition of Lord’s incredible contribution to the club.
