DIRECTOR of sports performance Neil Craig says the real test for the Demons on their nine-day pre-season camp in the Northern Territory will come next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Craig said days six and seven will be the time when players start feeling the impact of the harsh climate and tough training.

“The reason we’ve come up here is because of the heat and humidity and that in itself puts a stress on everyone, let alone trying to do the physical workload. What you see is individuals trying to start managing themselves in that environment,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“It’s still early in our camp at the moment, so the real interesting part will come Tuesday or Wednesday next week, when fatigue sets in. You’ve got the heat and the humidity, and we’re asking the guys to train really hard and we’ve got them in a really competitive environment, in terms of fighting for spots.

“They’re getting reviewed every day about where they sit in their areas and Mark [Neeld] talks about a depth chart for competition and results. So that’s all about stress to a certain extent and that’s the reason for the camp.”

Overall, Craig said he had been impressed by the squad’s zest at the camp.

He highlighted the wrestling session on Saturday as an example of the determination shown by the players.

“In general, the attitude has been really good from all of them,” he said.

“They understand that once they are in a combative element, there is no place to hide.

“That’s one of the reasons we do it, so the attitude of the group has been very, very good.”
