MELBOURNE has secured Jack Viney - the son of Melbourne great Todd - via the father/son rule with a second round draft pick (No.26 overall) in the NAB AFL Draft.

The 18-year-old was one of the most sought after young players in the country, but the Demons locked in Viney, when they successfully gained him via the father/son bidding system.

The only other club to bid for Viney was Port Adelaide with its No.7 selection.

But in the lead-up to Monday morning’s father/son meeting at Etihad Stadium, it was reported Greater Western Sydney and particularly Gold Coast would bid for Viney’s services.

Had that occurred - as the Giants have pick No.1 and the Suns have choice No.2 - Melbourne would’ve had to have used selection No.3 in the NAB AFL Draft to draft Viney.

But given the Giants and Suns opted not to bid on Viney, Melbourne will now claim Viney at No.26 in the NAB AFL Draft.

It’s an top result for the Demons, meaning they can still have selections No.3 and No.4 in the NAB AFL Draft.

The Demons can either keep these picks for the NAB AFL Draft or use one or both as bargaining chips to acquire AFL listed-players via the trade period, which officially started on Monday.

An outstanding young junior player, Viney is a left-footed inside midfielder, whose attack on the ball is ferocious for his age and size.

His father Todd, the club’s general manager of player development and strategy, will now officially call his name out in the November NAB AFL Draft.
