First quarter: Melbourne 4.4 (28) to Port Adelaide 0.3 (3)
Melbourne controlled the opening term, kicking four goals to nil.
The Demons dominated in several key areas, including disposals (124 to 86), clearances (15 to two) and inside 50s (17 to eight).
At quarter-time, the red and blue led by 25 points.
Tom McDonald, Christian Petracca, Jesse Hogan and Jeff Garlett booted one each for the term.
Garlett could’ve had three in a row, had his last two shots of the term not hit the post and the other done a late leg-break.
Second quarter: Melbourne 8.8 (56) to Port Adelaide 3.6 (24)
The Demons continued to hold sway in the second term, booting four goals to three.
Melbourne made it seven in a row before Port Adelaide landed its first for the day via Justin Westhoff at the 23-minute mark.
At the 27-minute mark, Melbourne led by 44 points, but when the Power secured the last two goals of the term, the margin was cut back to 32 points at half-time.
Hogan opened the quarter with two in quick succession, before James Harmes and Mitch Hannan booted majors later in the term.
Dom Tyson, in his return, after two weeks out with a knee injury, had 21 disposals by the long change.
Third quarter: Melbourne 11.8 (74) to Port Adelaide 6.10 (46)
Port Adelaide lifted its intensity in the third term, booting three of the first five goals to close the gap to 23 points in time-on.
But when Garlett dribbled through his second – a magnificent goal from the pocket at the 28-minute mark – Melbourne took a 28-point lead into three quarter-time.
Power skipper Travis Boak booted two for the term to have three by the final break.
Jake Melksham, who booted three goals last round, bobbed up with two for the quarter.
Michael Hibberd had 13 touches for the quarter to have 29 disposals entering the last term.
Final quarter: Melbourne 13.10 (88) d Port Adelaide 9.11 (65)
The Power started the final term strongly booting two in two minutes to reduce the deficit to 16 points.
Boak landed his fourth to start the term, before Charlie Dixon opened his account.
The Demons managed just one score before time-on – a rushed behind at the eight-minute mark – before Melksham kicked Melbourne’s first goal in the final term at the 24-minute mark.
Melksham’s third was a brilliant set-shot goal, tucked on the Members side of the ground from roughly 50 metres. And when Petracca nailed his second goal, the Demons were home and up by 29 points.
Justin Westhoff booted his second and the final major of the game, but it mattered little in the end, as Melbourne won by 23 points.
